New Venture Taking Shape

Seems like it's been years since I was in here last to post anything. For those still interested in following us, head on over to www.greatlakessportsnetwork.com

You will see what we've been working on since the start of 2011. Great Lakes Sports Network will be streaming games on the internet from in and around the Bay county area.

Football fans from the western Thumb area might particularly enjoy our week 2 match-up featuring USA @ Bay City All Saints. Our schedule is complete for the most part but I want to keep all options open and therefore will not release it beyond a week or so in advance of the next game.

Also, there is a sports blog built into the site that will more than likely replace this one....we'll see. I know in the previous post waaaay back in November I said this one would be taken down. Watching the numbers, quite a few still check in.

The End Of The Road

With both Ubly and Deckerville getting knocked out of the playoffs today, the 2010 high school football season comes to a halt for most of the Thumb media. This marks the first year since 1999 that a team from the Greater Thumb Conference will not make it to the semi finals.

With the end of the Thumb football season comes the end of my career with WLEW. I started out with Tom Meyer back in 1998 as a color commentator, took a few years off and did the PA duties at Ubly High School and later took the play by play chair in 2003 until today.
In the 10 years that I have covered high school football, I've been treated to many great memories and have worked with some tremendous people along the way.
As I mentioned above I started out with Tom in 98 and worked with him for his final season in 1999. In 2003 I did play by play with Myron Gracey as my color man. Myron left the booth following the 2007 season. My brother Jason Particka came along for the start of the 2008 season and worked with me the last 3 seasons. How many people can say that they get along with their brother well enough to work together on the radio? Aaron Maurer worked a with me as well, filling in numerous times as color commentator as did Chris Brown, providing a job well done. All of the color men I've worked with made my job so much easier.....thanks so much guys!
During my career I was able to cover 4 state title games, 2 of those ending in a state titles for the Thumb....courtesy of USA.
I covered the last Class C state title game in the Pontiac Silverdome and the first Division 7 state title game at Ford Field, both with USA.
Since 2003 I had the pleasure of going to the semi finals every year except this year following a Thumb team.
I strived to do the best possible job I could night in and night out. I'll be the first to admit however, I wasn't in top form every Friday night.

Some of the other tremendous people I worked with along the way....the first to come to mind is Paul Adams of the Huron Daily Tribune. To this day I have no idea how or when we made a connection, but I can say this....I'm glad we did.
Paul brought so much insight to our pre game/halftime and post game shows. Working for the paper and having so many connections at various levels allowed us so much insight on so many things that we wouldn't otherwise have. Paul is also a great friend on a personal level. The hours and hours we spend talking on the phone about high school sports, and personal situations are countless. Thank you Paul for making my life easier both on and off the air!!!

Eddie Fury really made things easy for me when he came along. It was the first time in all the years I worked for the station that someone came along to operate the board who actually had an interest in sports. Knowing that, I asked him if he was interested in hosting the pre game, halftime and post game show. When he took that role it gave our broadcasts an even more professional touch. When we started seeking and getting updates on area scores, Eddie broke in to pass them along giving us another dimension and attracting more listeners.

Perhaps the cherry on top of it all was when Eddie got to know Paul and Chris Ogryski of the County Press and created an hour long pre game show. At that point we were at the top of our game with a quality made pre game show, updates, halftime show and a broadcast crew that could concentrate on prepping for the game instead of handling all those other duties.

I could on and on and bore everyone to death with all of this but I won't. There is a lot that I will take with me into the next venture. Jason and I will once again be working together (hopefully) as we begin covering games in the Bay County area.
I am starting up a new business, Great Lakes Sports Network, that will stream games live on the internet. Since we both live in Bay City, it made sense to consider covering games in an area that is limited with online streaming and radio coverage. There are 8 teams in Bay County that we'll keep an eye on plus Reese, Vassar, Millington and Frankenmuth to the south to consider as well. Ideally I'd like to begin in the fall of 2011 but may wait until the fall of 2012 to get it going.

I'd like to thank all of the people I've worked with over the years and say thanks to WLEW for having faith in me and keeping me around this long. I can't possibly list everyone by name....but know that your help, hard work and support is much appreciated. Thank you to all the Thumb area athletic directors for accommodating us and sometimes squeezing us into an already packed press box. Also a huge thanks goes out to all the area coaches who allowed us to get pre game and post game comments and in season and post season interviews. It added another dimension to our broadcasts that listeners really enjoyed.

To the listeners, bloggers and anyone who passed along a compliment, concern or complaint, please know I did my best and thank you for the support as well. It's been a pleasure to bring you high school football in your cars, homes, in the farm fields, at work or where ever you were able to pick us up. Maybe we even put you to sleep some nights....God knows I've had my fair share of runaway games!!!
This blog will be taken down in the next month or so.....so bookmark the HDT blog and Eddie Fury's blog (Thumbtailgter) as they will be your leaders in Thumb area sports going forward.

Thank you to everyone and please understand I did my best and did it all for one reason.....the student athletes of the Thumb area. They deserve the coverage and attention and I'm happy to have been able to be a part of that.

Ubly/Ravenna Game Time Set

Game time for the Regional Final between Ubly and Ravenna is set for 2 PM Saturday in Ubly. The game will be on WLEW 102.1 FM.
Interviews with Ubly head coach Bill Sweeney and Ravenna head coach David Smith will not be available this week.

Jason Particka, Bad Axe head coach Dave Rowland and I will bring all the action to you.

Ubly defeated Saginaw Nouvel 34-21 to reach the Regional Championship. Ravenna defeated Merrill 32-30 on a pass play in the end zone with 0.5 seconds remaining.
On the play prior to that, a Merrill player batted down a pass in the end zone but the clock stopped with 0.5 remaining. Had he caught the ball (and he could have) the game would have ended and Merrill would have won.

Interviews For Friday's Game

Here are the interviews that will be used in the pre-game show prior to Friday's game. We will have Saginaw Nouvel @ Ubly, kickoff is set for 7 PM.
Jason Particka and I will be joined by Bad Axe Hatchet head coach Dave Rowland for the game.

At the moment we have Ubly head coach Bill Sweeney and HDT sportswriter Paul Adams. Both interviews are short in order to fit in the pre-game show.
However a more in extensive and in depth interview with Paul Adams can be found at www.thumbtailgater.com. I'm still waiting to hear from Nouvel head coach Mike Boyd. If we can get an interview with him, we'll post it here.

To Many To Count.......

In regards to the scenarios for the football playoffs.....there are just to many to count!
And that is a good thing for once. In the past, you could just about figure out who was going to play in a particular district and where those games would be played. This year it's a whole different story.
About the only thing that is certain is the fact Ubly will get three home games in the playoffs if they win each week. As it stands right now, Ubly has the third highest playoff point total in division 7. Only Hudson and Ishpeming have higher playoff points.......neither team would be in a district or regional with Ubly.
Here is where the fun starts though, Reese is on the edge of division 6 and 7. They could go either way...it's that close. Also it appears USA will qualify for the playoffs with a 5-4 record. So does that mean Ubly, USA, Reese and Genesee could be in a district together?
Maybe Ubly, Genesee, Burton Bendle and 4th team get lumped together sending Reese, USA, Nouvel and Merrill in a different direction?
Perhaps Reese, USA, Ubly and Nouvel will be paired up? Merrill is out there as a possibility too, though unlikely to be in a district with Ubly.
So many possibility's this year and that makes the Sunday Selection Show all the more interesting to watch.
It looks like Vassar is in the same boat as Reese, teetering between division 5 and 6. Also it looks like Deckerville might have salvaged a home game in the first round by defeating class C Lincoln-Alcona last night. But who will they paired up in a district with? The idea of a Bay City All Saints/Deckerville game sound intriguing doesn't it?

It should only get more interesting as the final teams punch their ticket in the Saturday games and things become a little clearer.....I said a little!!

Anyone care to throw their best guess out there? Should make for some interesting discussions.

GTC To Add Third Division

Greater Thumb Conference athletic directors on Wednesday voted to add the NCTL as a third division to the existing conference for the 2011 season. They also voted to have Mayville move from the Greater Thumb East division to the NCTL division and move Bad Axe from the GTW to the East division.
This will create three six team divisions and help in the scheduling of games that has become rather difficult for some schools this fall.
The league by-laws have to be ammended for this change to become official.

It appears at this time that the NCTL will retain it's name for the third division under the umbrella of the Greater Thumb Conference. The East and West will keep the same names as well. What is unclear is how all conference honors and trophy's for the NCTL division winner will be handled. It is also unclear what will happen after the 2011 season, if this arrangement will remain or if other changes would be made.
This change will be for football only at this time. No other sports in either league will be affected.

As it stands right now with this move, the GTC will not add any other schools to any division. Millington and Memphis have applied to the GTC to fill the open spot left when Deckerville became a member of the NCTL.
Memphis will remain an official member of the NCTL and remain in that division. Millington's application (and any others that come in) will be put on hold for now.

Set And Ready To Go

We are under 24 hours away from the start of the 2010 high school football season and we are ready!!
Jason Particka will join me for his third season in the broadcast booth as my color analyst. I will be working my tenth season in the booth, eighth as play by play.

Everyone should notice a difference in audio quality this season. We will be using a different broadcast delivery method that should make listening to the games much more enjoyable and clearer. There may be a few weeks that we have to use the cell phone but we are slowly getting away from that way of bringing games to you.

First Coaches Interview Is Ready

Coaches Corner returned to the airwaves of WLEW earlier today with Travis Fischer of the North Huron Warriors leading things off. The link is posted below.
Tuesday, Owen-Gage head coach, Jason Pierce will join me followed on Wednesday by Troy Schelke of Harbor Beach.
Laker head coach George Gardy will be in on Thursday and coach Jason Kiss of Vassar will drop by on Friday to round out the week.

Ubly To Honor Former Coach On Sept. 10

UBLY — As football coach in five different decades, Jerry Herp left an indelible mark at Ubly.

On Sept. 10, Herp will be forever honored as the football field will be named after the Hall of Famer, who passed away in November of 2009.

Prior to that Week 3 game against Marlette, there will be a 10 minute ceremony to dedicate the field and the memorial stone to commemorate the event.

The granite marker will stand 44 inches tall and measure 65 inches wide. It will include Herp’s career accomplishments.

“I’ve known the Herp family for a long time. Back in May, when Ubly athletic director Dan Delamarter approached me about being part of the committee that was planning this event, immediately I said yes,” said Rick Glaza, a member of the Herp Field committee.

“From then on, I was in direct contact with Jerry’s wife, Elrae, gathering information for a granite marker that will be placed near the field, and also involved with putting together the dedication program and script for the evening of September 10th.”

During his career, Herp amassed a 140-106-2 record, won 10 league championships, and made two playoff appearances. He was named Regional Coach of the Year twice, and led the Bearcats to unbeaten seasons in 1965, 1966 and 1972.

He coached his final game in 2000, and was elected to the Michigan High School Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame in December of that year.

“I was a manager for Coach Herp back when I was in high school in the middle to late 1980’s, and the thing I will always remember is pretty simple... If you fall down, pick yourself back up and try it again,” Glaza said.

“That message was the same if you were on the football field or in everyday life. Success comes with hard work and dedication. (Herp) truly believed in that and made sure everyone who came in contact with him knew it too.”

Along with his duties of being a member of the Herp Field committee, Glaza will also be calling the game for WLEW 102.1 FM.
“I’m sure I will be a bundle of nerves — in fact I know I will be,” he said. “I strive for perfection and I want this night to be as perfect as it can be for the Herp family and for the community of Ubly.”

The Herp Field committee is still looking for donations to cover the cost of the granite marker. Donations can be sent to Coach Herp Memorial at Ubly High School, c/o athletic director, 2020 Union Street, Ubly, 48475.

The family is also looking for stories about Coach Herp for an eventual book. Anyone wishing to share a memory can visit http://www.coachherp.com/.

Next Monday will begin Coaches Corner on AM 1340, WLEW during the noon and 5 PM sportscast. Those interviews will also be posted here for you to listen to as well. Look for them in the box on the right side of the page. The first one will be available late Monday afternoon or early evening.
All the links to the interviews will be available to listen to anytime up until the season starts on August 27th.

Also sportswriter Paul P. Adams of the Huron Daily Tribune is putting the finishing touches on a story he is writing regarding the Herp Field dedication on September 10th. As soon as it is done we'll post it here for you to enjoy.

2010 Coaches Camp For Kids A Sucess

Close to 150 kids joined various Thumb area coaches at Laker High School this week for the annual "Coaches Camp for Kids".

The yearly event ran Monday thru Thursday this week and taught the kids various football techniques......more than just running, passing and kicking.
Today's events included touch football games, an award ceremony and hot dogs, soda and ice cream to end the day.

Something To Chew On

Been a while since I checked in so I thought I'd throw weeks 1 thru 3 of the radio schedule at you while everyone finishes their extended Holiday weekend.

All games on WLEW, 102.1 unless otherwise noted. The schedule is subject to change so here it goes.................

Week 1: Harbor Beach @ Bad Axe
Week 2: Harbor Beach @ North Huron
Week 3: Marlette @ Ubly

Weeks 4, 5 & 6 will be announced after week 2 action has finished up.
In weeks 2 & 3 some history will be made and we'll be there to bring it to you.
History will also be made as Deckerville returns to the NCTL after departing the Greater Thumb East.

Week 2 has the GTE vs. the NCTL when for the first time since 1964, Harbor Beach and North Huron reunite on the football field. Harbor Beach leads the all time series dating back to 1958 with 5 wins and 0 losses. In 1960, 61 and 62 these two teams were in the Northern Thumb C Conference together.

Week 3 will have the Ubly Bearcats hosting Marlette in their home opener which is the same night that Ubly will dedicate their football facility. The field will be named after legendary football coach Jerry Herp. Herp passed away in November 2009.
Jerry took over the football program in the mid 60's and immediately put Ubly on the football map where it remains to this day. He amassed a career record of 140 wins, 106 losses and 2 ties.
He led the Bearcats to 10 league titles and 2 playoff appearances and twice was named Regional Coach of the Year. Jerry's coaching career covered a span of 5 decades beginning in 1963 and finishing in 2000 with a break from 1974 to 1983.

These are just a couple of the highlights in the upcoming football season that we'll bring to you over the airwaves.
For some early football chatter..........let's hear who some of you are picking to win the NCTL and the GTE and GTW this year.
My very early thoughts are Reese in the GTW, Deckerville in the NCTL and for me the GTE is wide open.........can Brown City repeat the success they had last year? Will Sandusky be improved? Will Ubly maintain a grip on the top spot? Will Marlette finally stake a claim on the title? Can Harbor Beach put last year behind them and return to the power it once was?
If I had to make a pick right now, I'd go with Brown City on a blind pick with Marlette and Ubly to be right there contending.

Of course GTC expansion will be back on the hot stove and the issues surrounding the NCTL and whether it will merge or remain intact are hot topics and always open to be discussed as well.

Look for a few more things as we move closer to the start of the season in late August.

All Saints Season Ends

Marine City Cardinal Mooney ended the Cougars of Bay City All Saints run to the state finals, 51-47 Tuesday night in the Class D state quarterfinals.

That does it for teams in the NCTL and Greater Thumb Conference for the 2010 season. Both the girls and boys were well represented with deep runs into the state tournament this year.

Congratulations to all on a season well done!!

Kinde North Huron collected its first boys basketball Class D district championship since 2000 on its home floor Friday.
The Warriors built a four-point lead in the first quarter, and slowly distanced themselves from Akron-Fairgrove in a 50-37 victory.
Sean Clancy and Erik Dhyse scored 17 and 11 points to lead Kinde-North Huron (22-1), which advances to the Deckerville regional.
Joey Dybilas scored nine points for the Vikings, while three players added eight points each.
Akron-Fairgrove wraps up its season with a 9-13 record.

March Madness In Full Gear....Coverage Set

This update is long over due.....my apologies!
District tournaments for the boys get underway this week while regional play starts Tuesday for the girls across the state.

Let's start with the coverage for the girls. WLEW will have a double header on Tuesday if the schedule permits.
In the opener of the night, Jason Particka and I will be in Saginaw at Michigan Lutheran Seminary to cover the Port Hope Lady Bluestars as they take on Burton St.Thomas More Academy.
Port Hope is coming into the regional fresh off a 50-30 win over North Huron last Friday night for the district championship.
Burton St. Thomas More defeated Burton Genesee Christian 68-33 for the D title down at Flint-Michigan School for The Deaf.
The second half of this regional has the Lady Eagles of Deckerville playing Twining Arenac Eastern.
Deckerville needed overtime to get past CPS, 56-49. Arenac Eastern knocked off Michigan Lutheran Seminary, 54-48 to advance.

The second half of the WLEW double header will feature the Harbor Beach Lady Pirates squaring off against Saginaw Nouvel down at Genesee High School in a Class C regional semi-final.
The Lady Pirates defeated the Lady Lakers, 40-37. Nouvel defeated Merrill, 45-12.
Sue Schrader and Marilee Schock will have all the action in this game immediately following the Pt. Hope/Burton St. Thomas game on 102.1 FM.
The other semi-final in this regional has Brown City taking on New Lothrop. Brown City beat state ranked Sandusky, 58-47. New Lothrop defeated Reese, 37-35.

District play for the boys starts Monday at Bad Axe High School and WLEW, 102.1 FM will have all the action starting at 6 pm.
In the opener, Lakers and Harbor Beach face off, while the night cap has Bad Axe playing USA. Winners advance to play Wednesday nite. Cass City will play the winner of the first game Wednesday at 6 pm. while Ubly will play the winner of the Bad Axe/USA game immediately following.
Winners from Wednesday night will advance to the finals on Friday night at 7 pm.
All games in this tournament will be on 102.1 FM, WLEW.

Cuthrell Out As Head Coach At Cass City

The Cass City Board of Education last week bucked the recommendation of Supt. Ron Wilson and Athletic Director Don Markel to retain Scott Cuthrell as the districts football coach.

Wilson set a deadline of 2 p.m. Friday for board members to sign a contract renewal for Cuthrell.
In the end, trustees Craig Bellew, Sloane Stimpfel and Randy Severance signed the pact, while board President Doug Lautner and trustees Jim Turner, Jim Veneziano and David Osentoski did not.

Wilson then instructed Markel to prepare a contract for the next candidate in line for the post, veteran Cass City JV football Coach Ed Stoutenberg. Board members had not acted on that contract as of press time.

Wilson set a deadline for the trustees after the board failed to sign Cuthrell's contract during a rescheduled monthly meeting in December. Cuthrell was dismissed as the coach last fall after 10 years on the sidelines. School officials subsequently appointed a 7 member panel and charged it with recommending a new coach who would take the local program "to the next level".

From an initial list of 9 applicants, the committee interviewed 3 finalists, including Cuthrell, and on a split vote, recommended retaining Cuthrell.
According to Wilson, a majority of board members expressed concern about the football program, which prompted he and Markel to recommend that Cuthrell be retained, but make some staffing changes. "That recommendation was questioned, so we went ahead and didn't renew any of the contracts," Wilson said, adding the position was posted and a committee was formed to interview prospective varsity football coaches.
Wilson acknowledged appointing a committee--something that hadn't been done before to recommend the hiring of a coach--turned out to be a poor idea. But he also pointed out that the goal was to involve the community in the decision.

After the committee recommended Cuthrell on a 4-3 vote, some committee members pushed to have the committee disbanded and to start the process over again, but Wilson said that wasn't an option.
During lasts month's meeting, the board opted to take no action on Cuthrell's contract, in effect kicking the decision back to Wilson and Markel. Which led to Friday's deadline for the board to sign the contract, rather than wait until the next regular school, board meeting.

"I really didn't want to prolong it anymore. For the sake of the students and the program, we need to bring this to closure," Wilson said. "Unfortunately this is something that's polarized the board."
Wilson said he has and continues to support the recommendation made by his administrator--in this case, Markel.

Severance said Monday that he opted to sign Cuthrell's contract Friday for the same reason. "I signed because......Don Markel is who we pay to make that decision, I'm not into micromanaging . That's why we have administrators".
"The board has never been involved in making coaching decision, and I don't think we want to start getting into that now unless we're going to do it for all the coaches," he added.
Lautner said his decision not to sign was based on school officials' initial goal to hire a coach who would take the program in another direction. "With Scott returning, that was not going to give us that change," he said.

Basketball Hits The Airwaves Thursday

Happy New Year Everyone!

High school basketball returns to WLEW, 102.1 FM this Thursday night when Deckerville takes on Bad Axe in a Greater Thumb Conference crossover game in the WLEW Game of the Night.

Start time will be dependent on the finish time of the JV game but we anticipate hitting the air around 7:30 or so.
Clark Brock will join me courtside for the call of the game.

I have the entire broadcast schedule and will post it this weekend. Most weeks will feature 2 games and all of them will be on 102.1 FM unless otherwise noted......and as always, the schedule is subject to change and probably will due to mother nature for the most part.

Herp Field Dedication

Ubly School Board members Monday approved a motion to dedicate the football field in longtime football Coach Jerry Herp's name. Herp was inducted into the Michigan High School Football Coaches Hall of Fame in 2000 with 140 career coaching victories with the Ubly Bearcats. Herp passed away in November following a long illness and the dedication will take place at the first home football game in the fall of 2010.

Ubly's Season Ends In Semi-Finals

Ubly's bid for a return trip to Ford Field fell short Saturday afternoon at Brandon High School after Hudson defeated Ubly 26-6.
Ubly trailed 12-6 heading into the fourth quarter but the size of the Tigers wore down the Ubly defense and eventually pulled away with two 4th quarter touchdowns en route to the win.

There was no score after 1 quarter of play and for most of the second quarter there was no score until Drew Milligan ran 53 yards for the first TD of the game with 3:35 left in the 1st half. The PAT failed and Hudson led 6-0.
The Tigers got a big break on Ubly's next possession as Nathan Smith stripped a stacked up Brian Nash and returned it 21 yards for the Tigers second score in 19 seconds. Again the PAT failed and Hudson was up 12-0.
A mix of the run and pass set up Ubly's first and only TD of the game. A fourth down conversion inside the Hudson 20 gave the Bearcats a first and goal at the Tigers 10 yard line. Adam Glaza hit Eric Booms on the left side of the end zone for a Bearcats score. The PAT was no good and Hudson led 12-6 at the half.

The second half started much the begining of the game as neither team was able to get into the end zone trading possession after possession. But in the 4th quarter when Ubly's defense was showing signs of fatigue, Hudson struck again. Chris Robbins scored on 15-yard run with 7:29 left in the game. The PAT again failed and it was 18-6.
Nathan Smith added a 25-yard run with 26 seconds left and Chris Dickerson ran in the 2 point conversion to end the scoring.

Hudson will now face Traverse City St. Francis in the division 7 state title game at Ford Field next Saturday at 10 AM.
The Bearcats finish the season 12-1.

"Best Little Coach in Ubly" Passes On

Earlier this morning, former Ubly Bearcat head coach Gerry Herp passed away while surrounded by members of his family.

The following message was posted today on coach Herp's website, www.coachherp.com ......a website designed by daughter Betsy for people to post stories and thoughts on coach Herp to lift his spirits and aid in his recovery:
WE WOULD LIKE TO THANK ALL THE PEOPLE WHO HAVE AND WILL RESPOND TO THIS WEB SITE. MY DAD, COACH HERP, LOVED THE MESSAGES AND LOOKED FORWARD TO HEARING THEM RIGHT UP UNTIL THE LAST FEW HOURS. Ubly vs. Hudson In Semi-Finals Showdown

The Bearcats have reached the Division 7 final four for the second straight year by defeating Petersburg-Summerfield 42-20 in Ubly tonight in front of an estimated crowd of 2000 to 2500 fans.
This makes back to back regional championships for the Bearcats for the first time in school history.
Up next for the Bearcats is the Hudson Tigers next Saturday afternoon, 1 PM at Ortonville-Brandon High School.
The Tigers are fresh off of a regional championship win over Mendon Friday night, 42-41 in double overtime.

Justin Cleary (TD runs of 4 and 9 yards), Bryan Nash (TD runs of 2 and 22 yards), Jordan Terassi (TD run of 27 yards) and Adam Glaza (TD run of 3 yards) led Ubly, 12-0 on the season, in the winning effort.
Eric Cogan had 3 TD catches ( 20, 45 and 60 yards) for the Bulldogs in the losing cause.

Pairings Announced Tonight On TV And Radio

If you are at home watching on TV the MHSAA selection show will be on Fox Sports Detroit begining at 7 PM.

Radio coverage for next weekend on WLEW will be announced Monday mid-day and will be posted here as soon as I get the information.

Here is a site worth looking at that has a list of automatic qualifiers and projected 5-4 teams that could be in. It looks like Division 7 is going to be loaded this year with the likes of Hudson, Reading, TCSF, Ravenna, Ubly and Mendon. Could be a wild ride in this years playoffs!

Bearcats, Rockets Dominate.....Week 7 Final Scores

Thanks to Chris Ogryski and Paul Adams for the info on tonights game.

Ubly held Brown City to a whopping 27 yards thru 3 quarters tonight en route to a 44-8 thumping of the Green Devils. Brown City ended with 80 yards rushing and 31 yards passing on the night in the loss.
The Green Devils only score came on a 99 yard fumble recovery at the goal line while the Bearcats were driving near the end of the 2nd qtr.
Any more doubters out there now?? Ubly has passed the test in beating both the Vulcans and Green Devils with ease. Next up....Deckerville.

Meanwhile over at Lakers, the Rockets kept their Greater Thumb West title hopes alive with a 33-7 win over the Lakers. Who saw this coming? Many, including me, figured the Lakers would finish off the Rockets and claim a share of the title tonight. Now the Lakers are in a must win situation against the Hatchets next Friday. Bad Axe beat up big time on Mayville.

Final scores from the area are posted below including the Harbor Beach/Cass City tilt that had plenty of fireworks. Final score in HB was Cass City 54, Harbor Beach 42.
Cass City scored 7 rushing touchdowns including Alex Varney scoring 4 TD's for the Red Hawks (3 on the ground 1 in the air). Austin Osentoski had 18 carries, 160 yards and 4 TD's. Shane Ginther scored 3 TD's for the Pirates (running for 1, passing for another and catching another in the air). Cass City was outgained in total yards on the night, 484-371.

Game Added To Radio Schedule And Coaches Corner Lineup

In addition to the already existing radio schedule for 2009, week 8 has been determined and added to the list.
Jason and I will be in Deckerville to see the Eagles and Bearcats tangle in a GTE match-up. The game will be on 102.1 FM.

Coaches Corner for the rest of the week looks like this......later today I will post the interview with Laker head coach George Gardy. Tomorrow will be Jason Pierce of Owen-Gage and Friday will feature Jason Beagle from USA. Look for those to posted around mid-day......each day.
Each interview follows the same course as I'm limited to 5 to 7 minutes with each coach for each show.

Coaches Corner And Other Goodies

I am in the process of interviewing area coaches in the Coaches Corner program that will air on AM 1340 WLEW during the noon and 5 PM sportscast following the news.
Those interviews will start on Monday August 17th and the audio files will also appear here on the blog for those out of the listening area or even out of state. Look for them in the sidebar section where the "Weekend Roundup" segment is normally posted.

Some other stuff to consider as week 1 approaches....

Time to vote: Polls featuring the Greater Thumb Conference, NCTL and the BWAC will be posted sometime this weekend. This will give you an opportunity to vote on who you think will win the various conference championships. My early picks......Lakers in the GTW. Ubly in the GTE and Dryden in the NCTL. Last year I got 2 out of 3 right, this season I'm going for the hat trick.

Who let the dogs out? The folks over at USA did.... that's who! Jason Beagle was named head coach of the Patriots after Dave Bitzer stepped down. In the interview I did with Jason I could feel the energy he wants to bring back to the school. After a handful of down years and low numbers, Jason has been beating the bush to get kids to come out. I have a good feeling about what Jason is about to do at USA. His interview will be posted next week on Friday after it airs on WLEW.

Coaches speak: For all the years that I have been doing Coaches Corner (coming next week to the blog) It has been extremely rare to have a coach throw their own team into consideration for a conference championship.....that is until this year. Ubly coach Bill Sweeney and Laker coach George Gardy did it during their respective interviews. In previous years most coaches who knew they had a good team would always do the politically correct thing and mention everyone BUT themselves. This year both Sweeney and Gardy said their teams will be in contention for their respective conferences. It certainly was a breath of fresh air hearing each one speak their mind...........and of course they each mentioned several other teams alongside their own, but nonetheless it was nice to have them say what they really felt.
Jason Pierce from Owen-Gage offered some insight into the 8 man format that he will be a part of this year and Scott Cuthrell of Cass City let us in on how he plans to to reload this year after having lost a lot of senior talent off of last years roster. I still have several to get done but as of this post I have 6 done and in the system ready for launch.

Bloggers are back! Traffic on the blog has steadily increased as the football seasons nears. Good to see as we are closing in on 2 weeks to go before we kick this season off. Keep checking back often as new audio files and polls to vote on will be posted and of course there will be plenty of opportunity's to comment on various articles that will be posted as well.

WLEW Radio Coverage For 2009 Season

Here is the coverage schedule for WLEW, 102.1 FM for the upcoming 2009 high school football season. Jason Particka, in his second season, will join me in the booth as my color analyst. This season will be my ninth in the booth covering high school football. I started out doing color my first two season's with Tom Meyer in 1998 and 1999, then moved into the play by play role where I have remained since 2003.

As for this season's schedule, in week 4 there is the possibility of a double header that night with a game on the FM station and one on the AM station. (See schedule below) In week 5 we will have a game 7 PM Friday night with Harbor Beach @ Ubly and a game 1 PM Saturday with Deckerville @ Lakers as part of their 50th anniversary celebration.

The broadcast of the Saturday game is tentative at this point and once a final decision has been reached I will post it..........after discussing the idea with the powers that be, it's looking like a real strong possibility it will be a go for broadcast.

Weeks 8 and 9 will be announced closer to that time as we see how conference championships and playoff races are shaping up.

It's On The Way!

High school football is 4 weeks from tomorrow (Friday)........where did the time go? Like the thoughts of many, summer never seems to last long enough for me. Before we know it the colors of fall will be here and along with it another exciting season of football.
Whether it's high school, college or the NFL......it seems we can never get enough.

Schedules for high school football, college and the pro's are out and the radio schedule for WLEW, 102.1 will be out tomorrow (Friday). Weeks 1 thru 7 have been set with weeks 8 and 9 and the playoff coverage to be announced closer to that time. There is also the possibility of 2 weeks during the season where we have 2 games over the course of a weekend. I will explain that tomorrow.
Of course the "Weekend Round-up Show" will return with Paul Adams as my guest and can be heard exclusively on the Internet via this blog and the possibility of a weekly coaches show featuring the head coaches of the "WLEW Game of the Night" is being tossed around. Again, that show would be exclusively on this site as well.

A lot of good stuff is on tap........look for the radio schedule tomorrow.

Pistons Fire Coach!

The Detroit Pistons have fired Head Coach Michael Curry after just one season on the job. Pistons GM Joe Dumars cited that Curry lost the faith and respect of the players.

My Opinion: I always felt that Curry did not have a grasp of the team early in the season. But I think it's time to bring in someone who has proven themselves with the Pistons....like uh maybe recently the resignation from the WNBA Detroit Shock, of the true Bad Boy...BILL LAIMBEER! Coincidence that he resigned on June 15? And now Michael Curry is gone..HMMMM....
Still though, "Lam the Man" has the killer coach instincts that the Pistons need. He is a competitor who never gives up. His desire to coach an NBA team could become reality if given the chance. I say he deserves it.
I also felt that the firings of former coaches Rick Carlisle and Flip Murray were mistakes. Larry Brown wouldn't have won and coached for an NBA title if it wasn't for Carlisle's building a foundation of that Pistons defensive team. Carlisle won coach of the year in the 2001-02 season with the Pistons. And we all know the collapse of a hopeful back to back title against the Spurs in 2005 blew up in the face of Larry Brown and the Pistons. (Brown was to busy dreaming of his future job with Knicks that he got and was then fired after just one disastrous season)

USA Lady Patriots State Champs!

The Unionville-Sebewaing Lady Patriots defeated Decatur on Saturday afternoon to win Division 4 State Champions for the third time in four years! Just simply awesome!

However the quest to have two Greater Thumb West Conference State Champs wasn't meant to be. The Reese Lady Rockets fell short by just one run. They lost to Gladstone 1-0.

Congrats to both teams for once again representing the GTC and the Thumb area in high school sports!

Penguins Win Stanley Cup In Motown!

The Red Wings looked sloppy and unsettled. Penguins led at the end of the 2nd period 2-0. Pittsburgh pulled away with the win 2-1 and the Stanley Cup!! Last year Detroit won the Cup at Pittsburgh, this year the Penguins win at Detroit...now that's Karma!!

Another "karma" moment for this year was the fact that former Penguin Marian Hossa who could have stayed with Pittsburgh but decided to sign with Detroit this year for less money just to get to the Stanley Cup Finals with hopes of a better chance to win. How's that for revenge! Mud in his face and not to say that Hossa was quite ineffective in the finals. A Stanley Cup and a Super Bowl Championship in one year to for Pittsburgh! It is just a movie waiting to be made!

The Penguins defense just stifled the Red Wings who could not seem to control the puck.

Detroit scored a goal late in the 3rd period cutting it to 2-1 in favor of the Penguins and had there chances to tie with seconds left after pulling goalie Chris Osgood out.

The puck handling was just horrible for the Red Wings, and there were too many rebound second chance shots that no Detroit player was nowhere near. Pittsburgh just plain outplayed Detroit!!

The Red Wings sometimes looked desperate and got all tangled up not getting many chances to get anything open for a good shot. Detroit seemed like a flat old dead octopus...

Congrats to the Pittsburgh Penguins. They have a Stanley Cup and a Super Bowl in the year of 2009.

Lady Patriots & Rockets Win Go To State!!

The Unionville-Sebewaing Lady Patriots defeated Rapid River this afternoon 4-0 to move on to the the Division 4 Softball State Championship Game on Saturday against Decatur at 3pm in Battle Creek at Bailey Park. This is the Patriots quest for a 3rd State Title in the past four years!

The Reese Lady Rockets landed their way into the Division 3 State Finals, by defeating Bronson 1-0 on Friday evening. Reese will take on Gladstone, 5:30pm at Bailey Park in Battle Creek.

Just simply awesome and historic to have two thumb area teams from the Greater Thumb Conference to be in the State Championship!

Heads up for an online audio show that the Huron Daily Tribune & Huron County Press Sports Reporters will be putting together later tonight on one of their respected sports blogs...

Red Wings Aim To Keep Stanley Cup

Tonight is the night! It is down to one game. One final game on the ice rink at the Joe Louis Arena in Detroit that decides who will be the NHL Championship Team of the Year and who will hoist the Stanley Cup above their heads. This Stanley Cup Finals, which is a rematch of last years teams; Detroit Red Wings vs Pittsburgh Penguins, has been a great series to watch. The Red Wings hope to repeat as champs. Right now, nobody knows what to expect tonight at 8pm on NBC, CBC or on the radio at WXYT - "The Ticket, and other affiliated stations that carry the broadcast!

USA & Reese Softball Teams Move On To Semi's

It was pretty amazing how two area GTC Conference moved on to the State Semi-finals in girls high school softball. The Unionville-Sebewaing Lady Patriots won their game 1-0, with a dramatic but not surprising home run blast by Carly Treiber in the bottom of the 8th inning over Mt.Pleasant Sacred Heart. The Patriots now will face Rapid River on Friday, 3:30pm at Bailey Ball Park in Battle Creek on Diamond 1.

Then the Reese Lady Rockets kept themselves in orbit with a home run in the 4th inning that Kaitlyn Squanda pounded and scoring the only run in the game to move on. Reese takes on Bronson on Friday, 6:30pm at Bailey Ball Park, in Battle Creek on Diamond 3.

Congrats to both teams and special thanks to the sports reporters at the Huron County Press, Huron Daily Tribune, and the Tuscola County Sports blogs for keeping us informed!
